Seawave
Nathan Faavae (New Zealand) - June 16th 2016
I have paddled about 20-hours in the Gumotex Seawave, about half of that one one paddle - around the island of Niue. I've done a lot of ocean paddling, in sea kayaks, surfskis and inflatables, in many different countries and conditions.
Inflatable kayak technology has allowed me to trips into some countries or places I couldn't get hard shell kayaks, New Caledonia, Australia and now Niue. That said, I regularly paddle inflatables in rivers in summer.
The Seawave enabled myself and paddling partner to be to the first people to circumnavigate Niue by kayak, in June 2016. I rate the boat 5 out of 5, full marks, I couldn't fault it.
There is always compromises between boats, and the down side of inflatables is they are slower than a carbon sea kayak, but the fact we could take the Seawave on the plane is a massive advantage. It actually cruised nicely at 8km/ph so even speed was okay. It's extremely easy and fast to rig, in 10-15 minutes you can be underway, quick to inflate. It tracks well with and without the skeg. The spray deck system works very well. The boat was really stiff and handled diverse ocean conditions with ease.
Gumotex make excellent boats, the craftsmanship and finishing is the highest standard, they're built to last and take knocks.
For me, the biggest feature of the Seawave is that it's a highly functional ocean going boat that you can roll up and carry as a back pack - the opportunities that offers are endless.
